Nudging items still possible?

Post by Impress »

In the PDF-XChange Viewer, it was possible to "nudge" items by 1 pixel at a time. Is that possible in PDF-XEdit Free?

Hello Impress,

Yes - annotations (comments) still nudge with 1px when you use only the arrow keys, and with 10 when you hold down the shift key while using the arrows.

Hi,

I have noticed that in earlier versions of Editor (at least in 316.0), nudging was very flexible - the greater was the zoom, the smaller was the nudge distance. Such behaviour allowed very precise alignment of any objects.
Now, in 321.0, and possibly in several previous versions, the nudge distance seems to be fixed at 1 point regardless of the actual zoom. The movement is visibly rough, and any precise alignment requires use of the mouse. Since the (proper in my opinion) functioning was already implemented before, I see the present behaviour as a step backward.

Hello Appenzeller,

I will pass this to our devs and see why this behaviour was changed, and what can be done for future releases.
As soon as I have any further news - I will post them here.

Regards,
Stefan

To nudge, are you just using the arrow keys to move an item one pixel at a time, or are you supposed to nudge an item a different way?

When I zoom in, and press an arrow key, the selected item seems to move much more than 1 pixel.

Hello Impress,
The default is for nudging is to move 1 pt of the document, not necessarily one pixel on your screen. You can change the nudge options from the Preferences (Ctrl+K) under the measurements category:

I hope this helps!

You hope this helps? Yes, TREMENDOUSLY!!! :D

Thank you! That's fantastic!

As I played with it, I might have uncovered a small bug. Is 1px supposed to correlate to 1 display pixel (assuming standard DPI settings)? I set regular nudge to 1px, but it is still moving the item more than 1px. How can I tell? I set micro-nudge to 0.5px, and it moves the item a smaller distance.

Hello Impress,

This is expected, not a bug, as items in the PDF can be located in a position that is between points. Due to our smoothing, it shades the nearby pixels a bit differently when it moves a smaller distance. You will notice that nudging is not dependent on the screen resolution, but the document resolution, as even at extreme zoom level, the lines still move the same distance in accordance to the document.

Kind regards,

Hello guys,

I think this upcoming feature would also prove useful for precise annotation placement:

I don't see any link after "placement:", but now when I quote you in a reply, I see that there is supposed to be a visible YouTube link.

Hello Impress,

That's strange, though it's not a link but a youtube embedded video. I'll duplicate a link to it here:
