Do not lock files when opening them

Post by fred____ »

Hi,

It would be nice if the editor would not lock pdf files when it opens them (or there was at least an option to prevent it). There was a similar request some years ago (https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... 62&t=22227). However i do not want any rename or delete features inside the editor. I just dont want the editor to lock the files that it has opened.

Many times when working with pdf files they change in the background. Either by deletion or through update by the source program (f.ex. any latex based workflow). Other pdf readers/editors support this by notifying the user that the file has changed since the last time the editor window was focussed and ask if the file should be reloaded (maybe with an option to auto-reload). Having to close and reopen pdf-xchange editor (or at least the file) seems unnecessary.

If there are problem discrepancies happening when changes are made to the file on a network drive, maybe the file lock could only be started if there is at least one change to the file?

Is there an update on this feature or is it still way down on the todo-list/still considered unpractical?

Thank you

Maybe Tracker Software can consider to offer a chance to open a PDF in PDF-XChange Editor as "read only" and so, make it to NOT lock the PDF for changes that are made by other users and/or from within other applications.

Even though, everyone should then use this feature very consciously, because it can lead to conflicts when at the same time you may like to also make changes yourself to the 'shared PDF' from within the PDF-XChange Editor.

But, if you are very sure to only use the Editor for 'reading', while offering to others to make modifications, then you may insist for an additional "open as read-only" feature.

Best regards.

Hi All,

I just checked with a colleagues from the dev team - and there is currently no way to open a file in ReadOnly mode in the Editor. There were ways to opne a file that way in the Viewer - so for TeX editing - it might be used, and for everyday use - the Editor.
Here are a couple of older topic discussing the ReadOnly mode in the Viewer:
