Can I highlight a column of text?

Hello,
I was wondering if there was a way to highlight a column or arbitrary region of text. Currently when you use the highlighter function it grabs entire lines with no apparent option to not do so.

If your column it a rectangular object - you can also try using the rectangle tool with the correct options.

Other method:
press and hold the 'Alt' key and left-click outside the text-block. Holding the mouse button, move pointer over the desired area of such text-block. When you release the mouse button - it will select and highlight text only inside the selection-boundaries...
