Strange Hyperlink Going No Where

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

Open the attached PDF file.

Hover the mouse over the word "No" before the text No matter hilighted in the screen shot

The hyperlink points to http://menu.no which is an unknown address.

How did this hyperlink get into the file. It cannot be found in Foxit or Adobe Reader, nor if I open the file for editing in PagePlus.

The author of the PDF file also cannot find the hyperlink in the source document.

My best guess is that PDF-XChange is automatically changing the text "menu. No" into a hyperlink.

"menu." is at the end of the preceding paragraph, and "No" is at the start of the next paragraph.

This depends indeed of the parameter "Create Links from URL's in page text", via the Edit-menu > Preferences > Page Text.
Switch it off and you will not see the hyperlink anymore.

I think that the Editor is going a step too far in it's interpretation.
Seeing "menu.no" as a hyperlink is little bit 'overdone'.

PDF-XChange Viewer and Adobe Reader do NOT have this behaviour with the concerning text in the "Strange Hyperlink"-PDF, although their parameter is also checked/activated.

It looks like a bug to me. The Preferences dialogue says that it will convert URLs of the form http://www.server.com to links. I suppose one might expect a URL like "www.mydomain.com" to be linked too, but with neither http nor https nor www it really should not be creating links.

After a little bit of testing, it seems to me that the interpretation of hyperlinks in PDF-XChange Editor is based on minimum one character, followed by a point (".") and then followed by an existing country code.

There is indeed no check on "http://", "https://", "file://", ...

Something to correct for the next release ?

Hi guys,

I've reproduced the issue and have created a ticket for it: RT-3082.

However, please be aware that the fix very likely won't make it into today's/tomorrow's release, as it was discovered a little too late.

Cheers,

Here is another PDF file that reacts very badly to this feature.

Why numbers in a table would be regarded as URLs is a complete mystery.

The bug was reported in this thread on the Serif Community forum.

Hi Bhikkhu,

Thanks for the info. - the Dev. Team are aware of the issue and are working to fix the issue. For now, you can stop this happening by going to Edit --> Preferences --> Page Text and disabling the Handle IP-Adresses option.

HTH!

That option was already disabled. I had to disable the option "Create links from URLs" option to solve the issue.

Although this issue may have been reported too late for build 313 there have been two more releases since then.

It's not a critical issue to create links going nowhere, but I hope that this gets fixed soon.

Strange, I wouldn't have expected that. I'll pass that info. along, but I'm sure the Dev. Team are aware by now.

Build 315 was a minor release that was purely intended to implement the new protection system into our SDK's and no new features or non-critical fixes were included, but some critical issues were. This was not deemed critical, as it has little to no effect on a user's workflow/the usability of the software, and so could not be included.

I cannot advise on when the fix will be released, or in what build, but I would 'guesstimate' that it should be included for 316.

Thanks,
