adding command to user defined toolbar crashes program

Post by wilfried hennings »

As I am missing a toolbar which includes commands like font, font size, bold / italic, I tried
- "customize toolbars", add a user defined toolbar, named e.g. "Format"
so far, so good.
- select a command, e.g. from the "edit" category, "font" (set font for the selection) and drag-drop it on the new toolbar.
Result: pdf-Xchange-Editor crashes.
Verified on two PCs with Windows 7 Prof. 32bit,
pdf-Xchange-Editor version 5.5 build 312.1.

Hello wilfried hennings

Thank you for the post. Please try using CTRL+E to toggle the properties toolbar.

I hope that helps!

This doesn't help. Properties toolbar contains only "Exclusive mode", not the font type / size/ style commands, and these commands cannot be added to the properties toolbar.
Moreover, this also doesn't solve the problem that pdf-Xchange-Editor crashes on the attempt to add commands to a user defined toolbar.

Hello wilfried hennings,

The properties toolbar is dynamic and changes based on the tool being used and what is selected. For example, if you select a text box, but are not typing in the text box, you will see these options:
Image

While, if you are typing in the text box, the properties toolbar will change to:
Image

Adding new items and actions to custom toolbars works well in all my tests. Could you please let us know what operating system you are using?

Thanks!

I experience the crash when trying to add a command to the user defined toolbar
in two PCs with Windows 7 Prof. 32bit, pdf-Xchange-Editor version 5.5 build 312.1.
Both, when pdf-Xchange-Editor is run in a restricted user account as well as when run as administrator.

Properties toolbar doesn't show the font commands when I use the "select text" tool (in the standard toolbar next to the "hand" tool).

Hello wilfried hennings,

Thank you for specifying that. I will test with a 32 bit install, then post back here. Please note that base content text can not be manipulated using the text select tool. For that, you will need to use the edit content tool.

I hope that helps!

Thank you for pointing out that text can not be manipulated if selected by the text select tool.
Keeping this in mind it makes sense that if text is selected by the text select tool the font properties do not show up in the properties toolbar.
They indeed show up if text is selected by the edit content tool.
So the first part of my original post is solved, there only remains the crash when trying to edit the user defined toolbar.

Hi Wilfried,

Thanks for the post - I'm not able to reproduce the crash here. Do you leave the toolbar as a floating toolbar, or do you dock it? If the latter, please advise where the toolbar is being docked?

Thank you.

The crash appears in both cases, when the toolbar is floating as well as when it is docked.
It occurs on two fairly different PCs:
1.) Tower, Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 2 GB RAM, ASUS P5Q-E board, Kaspersky Antivirus
2.) Laptop Toshiba Satellite A200-1TJ, 2 GB RAM, Bitdefender Antivirus

Hi Wilfried,

Neither myself, not my colleagues are able to reproduce this here. Could you please try completely uninstalling, deleting the Program Files\Tracker Software directory from within Windows Explorer, then restart your PC and re-install via this link:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVE5.zip

Keep us posted!

Partially successful:
Before, I had both pdf-Xchange-Viewer and pdf-Xchange-Editor installed.
After un-installing both, deleting the folders
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Tracker Software
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Tracker Software
and
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software
adding and modifying a user defined toolbar now works if run in an administrator account.

But when pdf-Xchange-Editor is run in a limited user account, adding a command to a user defined toolbar still crashes the program.

note: By uninstalling the Viewer, the file associations for the Viewer were removed from
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_CURRENT_USER (which was the admin account)
but not from the limited user account. I removed these manually.
Could it be that there are more registry keys left which could cause the crash and should be removed?

Hello wilfried hennings,

Please try uninstalling again and removing anything in
HKCU/Software/Tracker Software
and
the same in HKLM/Software/Tracker Software - this should remove all settings and preferences for all our products, so the install after that will be a clean one.

Stefan

After un-installing, I deleted the folders
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Tracker Software
and
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software
and the registry keys (with subkeys)
HKCU/Software/Tracker Software
(for each user)
and
HKLM/Software/Tracker Software

This reset the language setting to English (built-in) and all toolbars to default.

Adding and modifying a user defined toolbar now works if run in an administrator account,
but still in the limited user account, trying to add a command to the user defined toolbar crashes the program.

I tried: Close pdf-X-Editor.
Launch regedit in the admin account.
Export the admin's key (with subkeys)
HKCU\Software\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\Settings\CmdBars
to .reg file.
Close regedit and launch it in the user account.
Delete the key
HKCU\Software\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\Settings\CmdBars
Import the exported .reg file.

But as soon as pdf-X-Editor is launched, it overwrites the imported keys with the previous settings.
So it appears to me that the toolbar settings must be stored elsewhere, too - but where?

Addendum:
1.) With logging out of the Windows' user account after importing the keys and logging in again, most of the imported toolbar settings are preserved, but not all. The user defined toolbar stays invisible.

2.) Adding commands to a built-in toolbar works in all cases.

3.) Astonishing, re-importing the reg-keys with commands added to a built-in toolbar completely restores the previously modified toolbars. Only a user defined toolbar causes problems.

Hi Wilfried,

Even testing on limited user accounts, we can't reproduce this. Could you please send the crash dump(s) to support@pdf-xchange.com, with a link back to this topic?

Hi Wilfried,

I'm afraid that, even with the information that we have now, we are still unable to reproduce the issue. Could you please go to Edit --> Export settings and send us your settings file?

Hi,

I'm from Holland.

I want to add some standard editing options in a toolbar so I don't have to 'right'click to choose from the various editingoptions (rectangle green etc...)

If I add a new toolbar and add anything to the toolbar PDF-Exchange editor crashes.

PDF-Xchange v5.5 (gecompileerd 313.1) (Jun 8 2015;10:12:42)
OS Windows 7 pro 64bit (servicepack1)
Intel Xeon E5-2620
16GB RAM

Edit:
Tnx for your info Radi. The setting reset doesn't solve the problem. I will try to Reinstall later on.
P.S. a colleague has the same computer and the same problem. Another colleague has a laptop with same OS and PDF-Xchange software/update, and has no problem creating toolbars.

Hello Joezer,

Welcome to the forum.

Have you tried any of the above possible solutions?
As my colleagues mention above - this is not a common behaviour - please back-up your settings.
To do so, please open the Editor and go to the main menu -> Edit -> Export settings
Then reset your settings from Edit -> Reset Settings and test to create or customize a toolbar.
If this fails, please do send us your settings file so we can test it on our side.

Regards,
Radi

Just for the record - I had the same problem:
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... sh+#p92001

The only way to work around it, was to modify an existing built-in toolbar instead of creating a new user toolbar.
