Copy paste links and optimization error

Post by JimK »

I am trying the trial version of Xchange editor. One thing I do frequently is copy and paste text or text boxes that have hyperlinks. It appears that Xchange editor does not copy the links, and the links have to be rebuilt after the paste. Is that correct or am I missing something?

Also, the Save Optimized Copy option crashes the program. It seems to work up to the point the file name is specified, but then crashes when the file is written. This seems to happen every time whether or not the pdf file has images. Is this a glitch in the trial version or is this a general problem?

My operating system is Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Thanks.

Hello Jim,

Thanks for the post. In PDF, there is no such thing as a hyperlink. You must place a link object using the link too.

For text, the Editor can be set to automatically detect a full URL (i.e. "http://www.server.com")

To turn on this feature, you can go to Edit-->Preferences-->Page Text.

As for the Editor crashing when using "Save as optimized copy", could you please send us the file with which you are experiencing this issue, as well as do please be sure you are running the latest build by running the following installer: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVE5.zip

Thanks!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Re: Copy paste links and optimization error

I did some experiments and found that links can be copied and pasted if the tool to create links is turned on first. That is what I was trying to figure out.

I just ran the current version of the installer and it gave an option to repair, which I did. That had no effect on the error for optimizing files. I have tried to save optimized files for about 8 different pdf files and the error has occurred on all of them. I have attached 2 small files that give the error on my computer. I'll mention again that I am running a trial version of the program.

Thanks.

I have the same problem with optimization. Had this same discussion back in Oct. a couple of versions ago. At that time I uploaded a file.

Hi JimK, Robert,

Thank you both for posting!

JimK - can you please make sure you have build 311 installed, and if you do - send us screenshots of the optimizer settings and Save File dialogue windows.

And Rober13 - your problem from the other topic should have already been fixed.

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the post - this works fine for me here. Could you please send a screen-shot of the settings that you're using for the Optimization?

Hello Robert,

Just tried your latest file and the Editor didn't crash. Can you please go to Help -> About and also ensure you have build 311 installed?

Hi Robert,

Thanks - but we've tested on 5 different machines now (with both Win 7 and Win 8 OS's) and were unable to reproduce the crash. Can you please confirm you are using build 311?

Yes I'm using Version: 5.5 (Build 311.0) (Oct 28 2014; 15:18:48)
Running Windows 7, 64 bit.

I have tried with various files of different sizes and sheet quantities. It always crashes.

Time to re-install?

Attached is a pdf file with screen shots of the program version, optimization settings, save file dialog, and crash message.

I also turned off my antivirus (Panda) to see if that had any effect, and it did not.

Thanks guys,

before we go the the dev team and ask about possibly doing a debug build for you, can I ask you both to export your settings to file and send them? (Edit --> Export Settings) We would like to use your settings during a test to try once again to reproduce this.

Unfortunately, we cannot reproduce the issue here even using your files and settings and that is strange.
Can you please get a crash dump (how to enable generating crash dumps please see here: http://helgeklein.com/support/creating- ... rash-dump/) and send it to us?

Hopefully the crash dump report worked.

Something I have learned after trying to optimize many many files to try to find a pattern.
If I save the optimized PDF to the desktop it seems to work. If I save it to the location where the original PDF is located it always seems to crash.

Hi Robert13,

Thanks for the dump - I will pass it to the guys to check it.

Is the original location a network one?

OK, this is bizarre. I tried saving the optimized file to the desktop as noted above and that worked with no problem. Then I found that it now works if the file is saved to the same directory. I have not done a lot of experiments, but the problem seems to have gone away.

Jim,

I thought the same thing but with more attempts it went back to crashing :(
I have experimented with small files and one that is 113 MB.
In this case size does not seem to matter :D

Does it crash when you press "Save" button on "Save File As" dialog?

Do you have any Shell "improvements" applications installed? I see your Save dialog has non standard look

Not that I'm aware of. Can you provide a picture of what the "standard" looks like? Maybe that will refresh my memory on what I changed/tweaked.

The issue is fixed now. The problem was with multithreading communication with Windows Shell (Save As dialog).
Unfortunately there are no workaround for that issue and you have to wait for the next build of the Editor :(

I had the same issue so was very glad to find Robert13's fix. Thanks Robert.

I do get some odd glitches though. Like the line I have clouded on the attached PDF. Is that normal and/or avoidable? Similar glitches when I print to PDF either with PDFX Printer Lite or CutePDF.

Hi justposted,

Thanks for the post and sample - could you please highlight where in the document we need to be looking? I'm not sure that I'm seeing it and need a little guidance, if possible.

Also, did you print this from the Editor? Could you please send the original that you are printing, as well as a screen-shot of the Help --> About dialogue?

Re: Copy paste links and optimization error

It is the bit clouded in blue. The underline goes wonky (thick/thin). Looks worse in Acrobat Reader.

That said, I now can't reproduce it with that file. Think it might only happen with unflattened and I seem to have lost the unflattened original.

However, I have printed (with PDFX Lite) another PDF which I have attached with clouded glitches and also attached the original. This time it looks okay with Save Optimized (I couldn't use previously because of the crash issue) but printing it causes glitches.

If I come across the issue with Optimized again, I'll post it here.

Edit: I can't add the original, because it is too large at ~20MB. Can I email it or upload it somewhere?
