Updater PDFX-Editor questions

Hi,

we've just migrated our clients (2300 users) to Windows 8.1 with PDFX Editor installed.
All our users are standard users on their machine, not local admins.
The issue now is that the tracker updater gives us the new version of PDFX-Editor, but in order to install this, you need to have local admin rights.
Is there any way to start the auto-update proces silently (with no user-interaction) within the system context instead of user context ?

Hello Stefan V,

Thanks for your e-mail. I have asked one of our devs working on the updater tool to check this and we will post back here as soon as we have further info!

Regards,
Stefan

Hi,

have you received feedback from the dev's about this ?

Hi Stefan,

Tracker Updater has a scheduler with a Run As feature, you should be able to choose a suitable account here to schedule update checks. I'm assuming this is a domain and you would have a domain admin account that is usable.

Hi Paul,

thanks for replying.
Can you help me out where i can find that scheduled option ? I cannot seem to find it in "Schedule Tasks" or within the PDFX-Editor software.
Besides that, does the scheduler install the update automatically and silent, with user-settings saved ?

I'm interested in this as well. I've been looking for a simple way to install updates; but my users do not have admin access, so popups telling them an update is available just generates more calls/distractions for me.

I see there's an option to set "Automatically check for updates" to "never" in the preferences (under Update) - but how do I set that for all users?

Or better yet, as the OP suggested, allow the update to install with appropriate privileges.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the posts - this option is configured from within the Tracker Update application itself, not from within the Editor. You'll need to launch the Updater from the Start menu (type "Tracker Updater" into the Windows Start menu).

Once launched, there is a checkbox to "Enable Auto Update Schedule" - the specifics can be configured within the "Setup" window:
Tracker Update -- Checkbox.zip
(50.59 KiB) Downloaded 121 times
Tracker Update -- Setup.zip
(31.98 KiB) Downloaded 115 times
HTH!

Hi StefanV,

as far as I know this feature was added with build 310 or 311, so it's not available in your build (309)

Kind regards

Thanks for the help PeterPan,

And yes - please always make sure you have the latest build to get access to all the features!

Hey all,

is it possible to set this settings automatically during installation or via GPO after the installation? I would like to deploy the whole stuff silently and don´t want to do anything manually at each client.

Regards,
Marvin

Hi Marvin,

If you want to set up the Editor to never launch the updater tool:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\Settings\Update\i.AutoCheckFrewq = 4 should suffice.
If you want the updater to install updates silently - check Will's post above.

Regards,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

I want to use the Auto Updater but our Users have no local admin rights.

I think this is exactly what I need, but I would like to set "Enable Auto Update Schedule" + "Run as" during the initial installation so I don´t have to walk to 1000 Clients and set it up manually. Maybe it is possible by GPO, too?

Marvin

Hi Marvin,

Launch the
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Update\TrackerUpdate.exe
from inside a user account, and set it up with the settings you want.
Then save the changes and they will be stored in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software\Tracker Update
Copy that to all user accounts and you should be good to go.

Regards,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

it didn´t work. I also can´t change the account in the "Run as" field from the Auto Update Schedule Task page. Is there any other option deploying the Updater to run under an Administrator? I would prefer to deploy the service running under an local admin account which exists on every Computer.

Regards,

Marvin
