Loss of editing function when using Editor instead of Viewer

Post by Bob Coleman »

When viewing a US income tax related form W9 (attached) with the Viewer, I can click most fields and enter text. When using the Editor, I can't find any way to enter text in the same fields.

I should maybe have mentioned that the Edit Content button is not active when viewing this form.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the post and sample - please make sure that you have the Hand Tool selected, then you should be able to fill out the form.

If that doesn't help, then I suspect that you are using an older build and would recommend an update, as this works for me:

HTH!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Yes, with the Hand Tool selected, I can fill out the form, but there are still some oddities.

In the Viewer, I can fill out the form with either the Hand Tool or the Select Tool selected.

Why in the Document menu in the Editor are
  • Replace Pages
    Delete Pages
    Crop Pages
    Resize Pages
    Rotate Pages
inactive, especially
  • Delete Pages
    Crop Pages
    Rotate Pages
which are active in the Viewer?

Why is the Edit Content button inactive?

Hi Bob,

These menu entries are inactive because deleting a page with form fields on it could potentially break the form. There are more sophisticated checks in the Editor than in the Viewer that prevent you from accidentally breaking the file. In the future we would be offering a forms editing tool as well - and once that is available you would be able to make changes to such files. Until then to be on the safe side the Editor is deactivating commands that could potentially damage your files.

Regards,
Stefan
