Export to Image - lossless

Post by dwg11 »

I wanted to convert PDF pages to images.
The images will be pasted into Excel.
The image will be resized several times, scaled up or down.
The aim is to: keep original image quality when resizing.

With the current options for "Image Type", I've tried all and tested.
When scaling down to 10% in Excel, saving and closing, re-opening the Excel file, adjusting the image size to 100% ... the quality is much reduced and can't be read.

Is there an option to export to SVG or XPS?
I wanted to try these formats.

Hi dwg11,

It seems like Excel is resizing and compressing pictures by default during save.

To avoid this, you will have to turn on the option "Do not compress images in file", via File > Options > Advanced, scroll down to "Image Size & Quality".

Be aware of the fact that this is a "per file" setting. So, you will have to make sure that the given option is turned on for every file where you like to preserve the original image quality.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for advising.
Is there a way to export to SVG or XPS format? Or EMF or WMF?

dwg11, you could export entire PDF pages, or selected PDF page components (with the Select Content tool) to PowerPoint by right-clicking on the selected pages or components, then copy that exported content from PowerPoint over to Excel and paste it there as Windows Metafile or as Office Drawing Objects. If the objects copied from the PDF are vector objects, then they will also stay vector objects in PowerPoint and Excel, thus remaining 100% lossless in their appearance.

I can't find the "Select Content" tool on PDF-XChange Editor Plus.

Click on Edit and select content with your cursor.

Right click on the selected content and select Export.

Alternatively, you can right-click on a page (or a multiple page selection) in the thumbnail pane to export the page(s) to an Office file.

I'd better not start raving again about what a terrific feature that is

Thanks for all this guys.

One thing that I am missing here is that images, if bitmaps will still be so even when exported to PowerPoint. It will maintain vector content where it was available in the original but to the best of my knowledge it does not convert a raster based image to a vector based image.

At least it didn't for me. I have typically used InkScape or other third party conversions to do this.

Am I missing something?

Hello Paul,

as you have already guessed, converting raster to vector images is a specialized, often difficult task that requires much manual tweaking, and goes well beyond what a PDF editor can or should be able to do.

Yes, Inkscape has an easy-to-use tool for raster to vector conversion!

Thanks for the comments.
The images are raster for information.
And the conversion was not as expected ... a mixture of text and graphics.

I did try Inkscape but had no luck.
I tried to convert to SVG, EMF and WMF.
They converted into a solid black image.
Do you have specific instructions. There are several options in the conversion process, starting with Import settings for the PDF. I could only choose Poppler/Cairo import.

Hello, dwg11

Our conversion/printing functions are not capable of generating text in a purely image based document, regardless of whether they are vector or raster images. If text content appeared, than the document being converted also contained text.

Unfortunately, I don't personally use inkscape, so I cannot offer any support with their software, but I wish you all the best in learning the ropes there.

dwg11, if your images are bitmaps to begin with, I wouldn't go to the considerable trouble of trying to convert them to vector images.

You should look up how to prevent Excel from compressing images in the program options, and possibly also from the Save dialog.

I believe that Willy already had pointed you in this direction.

You definitely want to do as David suggests, converting all your graphics to vector may not be trivial.

If you DO want to look into that, this site has some resources you might use: https://www.goinkscape.com/how-to-vecto ... -inkscape/

Thanks for the comments.
It looks like it's difficult to convert to lossless formats.

By the way, I typically have issues with receiving notifications. I've checked all the settings.

I think it all depends of your final goal.

Do you only have the intention to cut/crop/resize the PDF-pages that you import in Excel?
And is this only for viewing on a screen or also for printing on paper?
PNG-format should be good. Only for consultation on screen, a resolution of 150x150 dpi should be sufficient. For printing you should at least use 300x300 dpi.

The most importing thing to think about is the Excel-parameter for NOT compressing images during file save !

Have you checked your junk/spam folders to be sure they (notifications) are not being incorrectly filtered from your inbox ?

Hi dwg11,

This is going a bit off-topic but nevertheless an attempt to make notifications via e-mail working.

It might be a little bit confusing, but in case you are subscribed to a topic, you should see the "unsubscribe" option when you click.

Besides this, make sure to have the settings like shown in the attached image.

Also look into the "Profile" tab of your User Control Panel at "Edit account settings" if your email address is correct.

Good luck.
