PDF to MSWord

Post by cer » Sun Nov 21, 2010 6:41 pm

I've got a 212 page PDF which was produced by InDesign. I want to extract the text to an MSWord file so I can run a spell check on the text.
The extracted file has blanks where there are ligatures (fi, fl, ffi, ffl) and seems to have a lot of text in table formats. The table format doesn't matter for spell checking (although it does make it hard to read) but the ligatures not coming over is a serious problem. Is there anything I can do?

Thanks in anticipation,
Claire

Hello Claire,

Could you please tell us the build of the PDF Tools that you have on your machine, as if you are not using the latest build (currently 4.0.187) this might have already been resolved.

To check the build go to Preferences -> About in the PDF Tools.

Best,
Stefan

I've got version 4.0.0165 Build 0000. Does that mean I need to find a newer version?

Cheers,
Claire

Hi Claire,

PDF-Tools should be copying the ligatures as is so if you are seeing blanks instead of the characters it could be as simple as the font used in your Word file not supporting ligatures. By default the Word file created using PDF-Tools will use your system font. Try selecting all the text in the Word document and changing it a font that you know for certain supports ligatures. That should resolve the issue.

Paul's suggestion is definitely worth trying, but to ensure that your build will certainly support ligatures - it's best to update, as the latest build is 187, and yours is a bit outdated.
The latest builds can always be downloaded from our website:

Hi there,

I'm having similar problems as Claire regarding ligatures. In the resulting doc file, "fi" is deleted in most cases, but also sometimes replaced by a "white square"; "ff" is replaced by a line break. Of course I've tried to change the font to something that supports ligatures (as Times New Roman does, as far as I know), but nothing has changed.

My PDF-Tools build is 4.0.0.0191.

Since my motivation to use the converter is the same as Claire's (using Word's spell checker), the problem is very annoying.

Something I can do?

Best regards,
Sebastian

Hello Sebastian,

Have you tried changing the font in the rtf file after the conversion as Paul suggested above?

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

yes, I've tried that, but there is no effect.

Hi allodrjones,

can you send us a copy of both the source PDF and output RTF?

Hi Paul,

sure, is there a way I can directly send it to you without posting it to the public forum?

Best,
Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian,

Passed the sample to the devs, and made a ticket for this case:
#827: PDF Tolls: Convert to .doc/.rtf ligatures problem
So that we can follow it.

We will keep you posted both here in the topic and with e-mails.

Best,
Stefan

Wondered whether there has been any developments on the problem with converting ligatures?

Cheers,
Claire

Hello Claire,

The response I have from the devs is that this has been partially resolved, and that in the new major release it will be resolved with the new Wizzard (PDF Tools) that is coming.

Best,
Stefan

Hi, has there been any further movement on this? I'm still dealing with gaps in the MSWord files where there are ligatures in the PDFs.

Cheers,
Claire
