Optimization Greatly Increases File Size

Often, optimization will increase the file size by 1 kb. I know that's just due to header info. However, I have a particular file that increased 30+ kb after optimization! What the heck could cause such a dramatic increase!?!?

Hi abcjme,

Thanks for the post - Can you please advise on the Version and Build of the Editor you're using?

Thanks,

The example files are already gone ...

Are we talking here about PDF-XChange Tools or about PDF-XChange Editor ?
That is not entirely clear to me.

Regards.

Tools. No editing was done, strictly optimization.

The files are back now.

Thanks for confirming this abcjme!

I am now checking with a colleague from the dev team to see why this is happening, and if there's anything we can make to improve the performance of our Optimization tool with your sample file.

Regards,
Stefan

Hello again abcjme!

We've ran some tests on your files, and when using the default settings in the PDF Tools optimization - we can not see any file size increase, so can you please share with us all the settings that you apply to your file when trying to optimize it, which produce the larger optimized result?

Regards,
Stefan

There are only 2 settings I use (aptly named "1" and "2"). IIRC, either setting results in an increased file size.

Hello abcjme,
Could I ask you to upload the pdf files again for us?
I have a copy of the settings file, however the links in your first post seem to have expired.

Hello abcjme,
I've found that the file turns out slightly smaller using the tools preset you sent earlier on your original file.
Could I ask you to open then tool, select a file for optimization, and export the preset that you are using for the optimize function? The ones I have currently appear to be the defaults.
You can export the profile by clicking profile > manage > export.

If I understand you correctly, I think this is what you're asking for:

Also, here's a quick video of me going through the process:

Hello abcjme,
Thank you for the video, it helped me find the step where I had gone wrong, I have managed to reproduce the issue, and am bringing it to the development team currently.

Hello again abcjme,
Ive gone ahead and created an internal development ticket on the matter:
#4405: Optimize increases file size
I cannot guarantee a timeline for the fix, but we are working on it.

Have a good day!

Hello abcjme and Willy,

I am afraid that I have some bad news regarding this ticket. It is not possible for us to improve this handling due to the existing compression already in the file. jpg uses a lossy compression and we need to crop the image so first must decompress, crop then compress again. The problem is that we cannot determine the compression settings originally used, thus when we recompress the file size increases.

I apologize for this.
