PDFX-Change and citrix

Post by pctuki_fg » Wed Sep 15, 2010 10:39 am

Hello,

I got a problem with printing pdfs from citrix applications. With adobe's pdf writer I have no problems. With PDFX-Change it won't ask me where I want to store the pdf I am printing and I see that it puts the pdf in the printing que. It just vanishes from the printing que and I haven't been able to find the pdf if it even did anything.

Hello Ville Toivanen,

This is a question for one of our specialists in Canada, we have passed it to him, and he will respond to this inquiry later today.

Can you please advise which product of ours you are installing as a printer (Lite/Standard/PRO) and the version (e.g. 4.0185) and also the OS Version and if it is 32/64 bit ?

Also which application are you printing from and also if you are virtualization the app as opposed to a full Terminal Server session (e.g. Xenapp etc)

Thanks

We are running the Pro version 4.0185 with windows xp SP3 32bit.

The citrix applications are not virtualized they are just runnin in the server. We have many different applications I tried it but mainly Mapinfo 9.5 is what we need to get pdfs out of. Also tried it on MS PowerPoint 2007 too and it didnt work. It will put the pdf print to the printing que and it stays there for some while and just disapears and no trace of completed pdf anywhere.

Hi,

the only known issue is with kapersky AV and other of their security products - though apparently a recent update resolves this issue also.

Can you advise if you have kapersky or some other such security application and if so - please try adding to the 'Trusted' application list (or similar) as this has resolved in the past.

Also have you modified the 'Save' options in the Printer preferences to amend the output file path/name defaults ?

Thanks.

One additional question after discussing you issues here with the dev team - are you seeing a 'Print Progress' window at anytime in the process - or do you just see the spooling operation and then it disappears without any further messages/screen progresses etc ?

Also from what application are you printing (version too pls) and are you using file -> Print or the Office toolbar menu addin (Icon) if printing from MS Office ?

Thanks

The two programs I have tried so far are MS PowerPoint 2007 (via printing) and Mapinfo Professional 9.5 (also via printing).

First it starts printing it:

(Tulostetaan = Printing)

Then it removes it:

(Poistetaan = Removing)

I have set the saving to my desktop and nothing comes there.

Hi pctuki_fg,

In trying to understand what is happening here I had pointed out to me what appears to be an anomaly:
We are running the Pro version 4.0185 with windows xp SP3 32bit.

The citrix applications are not virtualized they are just runnin in the server.
If you are running the application on a Citrix Terminal server what is the reference to XP for? If the application is running in a Terminal Server that delivers full sessions via RDP then the platform from which the session is called is not relevant. It could be Windows, Mac, Linux or even a phone. I don't want to sound pedantic but the devil is in the details here and I'm not entirely sure that we are on the same page regarding what the Terminal Server is doing.

In order to use the print driver it must be installed in user space. This is why it cannot be set up as a shared printer. Either the print driver is installed in XP and no server is used (except maybe a file server) or it is installed in a full Terminal Services Server (Citrix or other) that runs the full user session on the server and XP is nothing more than an RDP display.

I think one of the issues here is that we are not clear where this print job is being run. Do you log into the Citrix server and get a full desktop environment with start menu, task bar and all the other things one sees when using a Windows computer or do you launch the server based applications directly in your XP desktop?

Again I'm sorry to harp on this but the results will be very different depending on your answer and we need to be 100% sure that your Citrix Server is delivering full session desktops not applications.

Sincerely

Pdf printer is istalled to the client pc like the adobe one too. I dont know much about citrix server etc, but it just shows all the printers I have in the client machine (including the pdf printers) in the print menu of the citrix program.

HI again pctuki_fg,

thanks for the screen shot - that is very helpful.

It looks to me that you have many printers shared through your remote session. I cannot tell from the image if that one you selected is actually on your XP PC and redirected to the Terminal Server Session or if that printer is on someone else's PC and redirected.

Do you intentionally have all those session printers available? If the Printer is the right one that is shared from your XP machine it should work and the "Save As" dialogue should be available on your XP desktop not your session desktop. Of course if that printer is from someone else's session then it will go to their desk top.

A much better solution would be to not make your local printers redirected so you have only those installed on the Terminal Server itself and have the PDF-XChange Printer installed directly on the Citrix Terminal Server.

It is very hard from here to tell precisely what is going on in your environment. Is there the chance toy can have your IT guy contact me at support@tracker-software.com, ask for Paul and refer to this forum thread. I'd like to have a better understanding of your set up to get you the right answer.

Well I have just load of printers as I handle the workstation support here. But most users have like couple of network printers and their pdf xchange. The real mystery is why adobe professional works ok, but not pdf xchange. They both are installed on the client computer but only adobe works trough citrix. There is nothing related to adobe installed on the citrix server nor there is nothing related to pdf xchange installed there either.

Thanks pctuki_fg,

how confident are you that the PDF-XChange Printer instance you are choosing is the one from the user's PC made available to the server through the connection session? I tested it here (RDP to a desktop with local printers redirected - not Citrix but I believe the functionality is the same) - it should work.

If you are seeing nothing happen at the PC end it implies to me that it is trying to run the job in another user space. This would be seen if the PDF-XChange instance was not from the same machine/session.

Perhaps as a test you could rename that local PDF-XChange printer instance, maybe add some unique text , then log onto the Citrix server and check for a printer with this new name. This way we could confirm that we are printing to the right instance.

Changed the printer name and tested with same results. It starts printing (see pic below), but it doesn't produce anything.

thanks for that pctuki_fg,

If you renamed the local instance then this suggests you have the right one redirected from your TS session. I am going to have to think on this one. This has become quite along thread and I fear I am missing some vital aspect that will help here. Would you be interested working in a in a remote session where I can see what it happening here? IF you can do that let me know by email to this address paul@tracker-software.com and I'll send instructions on how to do this.

thanks

Hi agn Niederberghaus & Partner GmbH,

can you advise as to the details of your environment? Specifically we are interested to know if this is a full session Terminal Server environment or a XenApp Virtualized Application delivery. Both are available through Citrix.

Another thing that is key is that the PDF-XChange Diver needs to be installed on the PC from which you are connecting, unless the server is actually running full session logins as a Terminal Server in which case it should be installed on the Terminal Server.

I know it sounds pedantic but the devil is in the details here.

We got it working eventually by adding some drivers to the citrix server. Not sure what the server guys did, but they got it working. I can ask specifics if you need em.

They installed only the printer driver option from the pdfxchange pro package to the server and after that it worked. As normally citrix has their own universal printer driver and it doesn't understand anything about printing pdf's so it needs the pdfxchange printer driver on the citrix server.

Thanks pctuki_fg,

that is great news. Thanks for sharing! I would personally be interested in talking to you "Server Guys" if that could be arranged. There are details I'm keen to hear from them about this set up. If it's OK please pass on my email paul@tracker-software.com or send me a contact email. I'd really appreciate it.
