Print Spooler Doesn't Start

Post by steve.thresher »

Windows 2008 Server with Terminal Services enabled.

The printer spooler service refuses to start which disables all printers on the server. We had to uninstall the PDF-XChange V4 driver before the spooler would start working again. The following error was reported in the Windows Application Event Log every time the spooler service tried to start:

Faulting application spoolsv.exe, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03626, faulting module pxc40pm.dll, version 4.0.170.0, time stamp 0x4af7f64c, exception code 0xc00000fd, fault offset 0x0000000000008d37, process id 0x6a00, application start time 0x01ca74eb96aee637.

All entries report the same fault offset.

Do you have any suggestions?

As I understood, you are using x64 server?

Do you have more information about this crash? call stack would be very helpful.

You're correct in thinking the machine is an x64 Windows 2008 Server but I'm afraid the only information I have is what's in the event log. Are you aware of any log files that might contain the information you are looking for or possibly a setting that would create additional log files?

I've found the windows error reporting dump files which I've attached. They show a stack overflow in the DLL mentioned above. Hopefully this will help you pin down the problem.

Thanks for dump files.
Please stop the Print Spooler service, replace the file pxc40pm.dll which is located into C:\Windows\System32 folder with corresponding file from attached archive, and run the spooler again.

Please let me know if that helps.

Have you fixed anything or is that a debug copy of the DLL?

I'll organise getting the driver re-installed along with the patch and see what happens. Thanks for the quick response.

We've now re-installed PDF-XChange 4 including the DLL you provided and so far it's working. Can you tell what triggered the crash from the dump files I supplied?

I was wondering what operation a user would have to perform to make the crash occur so I could tie the crash to a particular operation at my end.

Hopefully answered ..

A Beta is available here if of interest - and ready now to downlaod :

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/download/PDFX4Beta.zip

Will advise when this becomes 'official' and the 'gold release' - rather than beta is released.

Cheers

The beta is scheduled for release as a stable this week end: https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... =39&t=7566 and you can always tell the current version by checking the version number on the download page: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/downloads/users/ for end users and https://www.pdf-xchange.com/downloads/dev/ for developers.
As I write this the viewer version is 2.042.9 when that hits 2.042.10 you are good to go.
Best regards

Will the version history be updated to reflect the new release? I see 4.0.174 is available but the version history only lists upto 4.0.170 and I need to know if the fix you provided me is in the latest download.

Hi Steve,

The project manager responsible is in our Ukraine office and I am afraid they were working over our Christmas whilst we enjoyed a break - but theirs has just started this week - so this will not be done until early next week - thanks or your patience.

Still no sign of an entry in the version history for 4.0.174. How much longer will this be?
