Hi all,
we recently introduced SQL Reporting Services 2016 (that superseded 2012 SSRS).
Since then, when printing a Landscape-formatted report the following behaviour occurs:
Using the SSRS-Function "Save as PDF" -> a correct PDF is generated and saved to disk
using the Print-Function then selecting "Print to PDF" (Windows-Built-In PDF-Printer) -> everything works as expected.
BUT:
when PDF-Exchange-Printer is selected, a PDF is generated correctly but rotated to "Portrait" (so the text is standing upright) .... And also, in PDFXChange-Editor , these Files are not possible to be edited (like textmarkings etc.)
Opening the Files in AdobeReader -> same result. The files generated with save-to-file or MS-PDF-Printer are fine in AcrobatReader as well as PDFXchange-Editor.
Re-Install of the Suite did not change anything.
Any help is welcome on this !
Kind Regards,
Markus
i attached a file showing the different outputs !

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Hi,
No immediate idea.
Just a few things to check:
- do see an option to "Print as image" in the Print-dialog-box? If so, make sure to turn it off
- do you have a button with "printer properties" or "page setup" in your Print-dialog-box? If so, make sure that the orientation is set to "Landscape"
The pages in your PDF's generated by PDF-XChange, are they pure 'images'? Can you select some text in them, or not?
Do you have similar results when printing something from Notepad?
Regards.

Thanks for the reply.

no. no option there
- do you have a button with "printer properties" or "page setup" in your Print-dialog-box? If so, make sure that the orientation is set to "Landscape"
done. there was a Landscape / Portrait - Switch-Possibility that at least put the output to the correct orientation
BUT:

-> seems like thats the thing: nothing is markable , like a PNG-File (pixel-graphics when you zoom in:
This is "PDX-XChange": this is "Microsoft save as PDF": you can see the difference in 1200% zoom ...

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Follow up:
Printing from Notepad or Word: a "normal" PDF is created (Copy, Marking etc. is possible)

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Follow up 2:
in my desperation, i tried to generate the reports now using FIREFOX instead of CHROME-Browser accessing the ReportServer.
And guess what:
In Mozilla, the PDFs are beeing generated as expected !
Seems like Chrome or the chrome-printing-subsystem (i am using 94.0.4606.61 here) is no good friend with PDFXchange-Printer ?
When i print a "normal" webpage like https://editition.cnn.com in Firefox, the PDF is searchable etc. , all ist fine, same behaviour as in ReportingServices.
DEV-Team: any ideas on this ?

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Thanks for your feedback.
So, the "orientation" problem is already solved.
About the "no editable text" problem, can you check if you can play with the "resolution"-settings.
Sometimes setting a lower or higher resolution (dpi = dots per inch) can solve this. Not sure if it will in this case.
Regards.
EDIT: I only saw your latest reaction after posting this one.
So, please see: https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=36037
It seems like, if you have the latest version of PDF-XChange, there should be an add-in in Chrome for printing to text.

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Thanks for the tip willy,
but unfortunately neither lower nor higher DPIs change the behaviour with printing from chrome.

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Thanks for trying with the dpi settings. Unfortunately without success.
In either case, your problem seems to be solved by using the Firefox browser.
If your license for PDF-XChange Printer is still valid for the latest versions, you could try the add-in for Chrome.
Personally, I do not have any experience with that.
Regards.

Re: Problem with Orientation printing from ReportingServices 2016
Hello, Willy Van Nuffel
Sorry for missing this conversation, from what I can gather here, the issue is to do with Chrome itself. Many modern browsers, including both Chrome and MS Edge, now send their "print" information with text as "shapes" instead of actual font encoded information. This causes nearly every print job from these browsers to have no form of editable text whatsoever. Since we cannot stop them from doing that while printing (we are very much at the mercy of what they provide us) we developed the new browser plugins for Chomium browsers. These plugins directly convert the webpage (without a normal "print" action occuring), and allows us to have full control over the process.
Kind regards,
