Hello bqxmprij

Thank you for your post. PDF-Saver should be located under: C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange Standard

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the quick reply. Maybe I did not ask the question correctly. Where did the Job Management drop down menu go? In V6, I was able to select pdfSaver. It does not seem to be an option anymore. Below is a screenshot of my computer merged with a screenshot of the manual for pdfSaver.

And, yes, pdfSaver is installed.

Hi bqxmprij,

indeed that feature was removed, mostly because it was essentially redundant, you can simply append to existing PDF documents to achieve the same thing.

What? That is an inaccurate summary of pdfSaver. It does allot more than simply append pdf documents.

It is not redundant when I want to queue multiple print jobs and then combine all of those multiple print jobs in a single pdf. I routinely have to print 20+ things to pdf and then combine them to a single pdf. It is way easier/faster to queue multiple print jobs and print to pdf one time in contrast to "simply append to existing PDF documents to achieve the same thing."

Please re-consider. I purchase the corporate license. If the pdfprinter does not have this functionality I will not purchase it again.

Can I uninstall just the printdriver for v7 323.1 and re-install the prior version?

If the option to use pdfSaver has been removed, why is pdfSaver installed?

Hi again bqxmprij,

well this is an unexpected response. We really did not expect this to be missed. Of course you are right that to say it is the same as file append is a bit of an over simplification, I stand corrected.

We are always keen to listen to our users, I discussed this with the Development team leader and in addition to his reasoning that it is essentially redundant (over simplification not withstanding) it also causes other problems internally.

Having said that, we will indeed look into returning that feature, with an eye to correcting the internal issues we had with it. I have raised a ticket in relation to this. While internal only, if you refer to RT#4145: Feature Request :: Bring back PDFSaver in the driver options then any staff member can give you a status update. Hopefully it will be returned in build 7.0.324 in about a month's time.

I hope that helps.

Thank you very much for re-considering and the quick response. I really appreciate it. The responsiveness and consideration (and the lack of bloat) is why I paid for the license.

Again, thank you very much.

PS-my name is definitely not bqxmprij. You can just call me b.

Hello B,
The ticket in question has been assigned a work item number, so it is on our list to be addressed.
At the moment I am unable to give a definite timeline for it either.

Hello, I am checking in again. It unfortunately looks like this has not been added back to v7 328. Hopefully it will be.

I write the following to be helpful and clear in the desired functionality because queuing functionality is desired much more than all of the old features of pdfsaver/job management. A third party pdf software company https://www.pdfforge.org/pdfcreator provides a queuing function as shown below--I really want to be able to queue, re-order, delete some, and combine the remaining queued prints. Such functionality allows a user to print from any application (e.g., a browser, an email, a Word document, an Excel document, another pdf, an image editing program, etc.) and queue all print jobs. When ready, any combination or all of those queued print jobs can be combined so that the virtual printer spits out a single pdf. This is really, really helpful when printing 50+ websites, particularly when programmatically printing all open tabs in a browser to print in rapid succession. I do this daily and I would rather use your software.

Please consider such functionality. Thanks!

Hello again!

Indeed the ticket is still open and we are still looking at it. As Paul mentioned before there were some internal issues that need to be addressed before this can make any sort of a return, and we still have not found solutions for these. While we cannot make any guarantees on timeline, this is most certainly a Long Term feature request, and will not be coming back for a while. I apologize for the "not so great" news, but I would rather give you an honest answer.

I am certain that if more users showed interest in such a feature, we could raise its priority and assign more developers to investigating these issues. As it stands, you are the only user who has made mention of this function since it was removed. Thank you for the comparison to PDFCreator, and I am glad you have found a utility to fill the niche you are looking for. I should also note that while the function was removed in later versions, you can of course install the old version of the printer driver, which would include the functionality. Our old PDF-Standard installers are available here: https://www.tracker-software.com/versio ... e-standard

Kind regards,

Hello Tracker software,

I saw this thread regarding PdfSaver and Job Management while searching the informational regarding Job Management feature in PDF-XChange 5.0 virtual printer for ABBYY FineReader 14. A client asked us about Job Management feature and provided a link to a User Guide where there is a description of such feature which he would like to use in PDF-XChange 5.0 virtual printer for ABBYY FineReader 14. But when I select in Print Settings tab Save and there Use pdfSaver to manage jobs I do not see any job management windows.

Could you please confirm that it is connected with the issue described in this thread  ? If not I would like to ask how to open Job management dialog for our virtual printer PDF-XChange 5.0 virtual printer for ABBYY FineReader 14.

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,
Victoria D.

Hello,

Yes, that is expected, as the documents will collectively appear in the PDFSaver utility. You can choose to save all of the documents later on from there.

I hope this helps!

Hello Daniel!
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, the situation remains unclear. Let me describe my scenario.

1) Open the document, press Print, choose Use pdfSaver for Job Management in Save settings of PDFX-Change Printer for ABBYY FineReader 14.
2) Press Print in ABBYY FineReader 14 printing dialog.
3) In the opened window press Create new Group (see attachment).
4) After that the dialog closes.

The question is: how can I print all documents added to this group?
If I press:
  • Create New Group > a new group is created;
  • Append To Selected > the document is added to the selected group, the dialog closes, visually nothing happens;
  • Save PDF Document > only the current document is printed, previously added documents are not printed.
I'm looking forward to your advice.

Kind regards,
Victoria

When you click the button in this dialog, it is taken as you saying "I don't want to add this document to the list, just print it normally".

To print out the group, you will need to open the PDFSaver utility (if you happen to have both the old and new versions installed like I do you will see two results, choose the one that does not say PDF-XChange):

And then run the Generate > Create PDF function:

I hope this helps!

Hi OVG,

If it comes from Finereader, it likely is not our product, can you check and see if you have any other entries for PDFsaver? it should be located in our Tracker Software or PDFXChange folder (depending on the version you have installed) under C:\Program Files

Can you check this for me?

Thanks for clarifying there.

I have just spoken with my manager about this as he is more familiar with ABBYY and how our products tie in with theirs. While they do use our Printer driver, they have intergrated it differently than we do. As such I am afaid that I cannot offer much assistance on that front. You should find with the exception of it being unlicensed, that using our V5 Standard driver should work correctly as I've described.

Kind regards,

Daniel, thank you for your clarifications!
I could successfully create a job using the driver that you attached. Unfortunately, I still could not do this using PDFX-Change for ABBYY FineReader 14.
It seems that to use Job Management one needs a pdfSaver utility, which is not available within ABBYY FineReader 14 version of PDFX-Change.
Please see the information about the version in the attachment.
Could you please confirm whether I am correct?

Kind regards,
Victoria

Hello Victoria,

Apologies, it does indeed appear that Abbyy's version of the driver either does not have the job management utility available to be run independently, or has it hidden under another name which I do not know. As I mentioned before, it seems it has been integrated differently, and thus is not something that we are able to offer support from our end. You may need to contact your developers who helped to integrate our software for further support.

Kind regards,

Hello Ovg,

I had been using a version of V4 as it just happened to be installed for another issue I was testing. I have updated to v5, build 316.1 to test this for you, and found that it still worked as intended, although the dialog does look a bit different:
image.png
can you verify that searching for PDFSaver5 in the stat menu does not launch the utility correctly:

If not, the executable file should be located under: C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF-XChange 5

I hope this helps!

Hello Ovg,
Apologies for the delay, In that case I am not sure what to suggest, If you are still using the ABBYY finereader version, please uninstall all instances and then reinstall only our Standard (v5.5) printer, to see if the issue persists. As we have discovered, ABBYY's does not seem to offer this functionality, so it may be a conflict causing this.

Beyond that, As this is an older version, and it no longer in development, I am unsure if I can assist much more than this. Should this be a bug, we unfortunately would not be fixing it as the current version does not even offer this job managements utility.

Reagrds,

Sure thing OVG,

Like before, It seems unlikely that we will be bringing it back any time in the forseeable future due to the issues we encountered that caused us to opt that removing it was a better choice. However, one can never tell what the future may hold!

Dear Daniel and OVG!

I'm coming back to you with good news. Our communication with developers of Tracker software ended successfully with a solution.

It turns out you actually can use pdfSaver in PDF-XChange 5.0 for ABBYY FineReader14. Although it is not available in user interface by default.

To run pdfSaver after adding the documents to the Job Group of PDF-XChange 5.0 for ABBYY FineReader14 you would have to open the Command Prompt and run the following command:

Code: Select all

C:\>cd C:\Program Files (x86)\ABBYY FineReader 14

C:\Program Files (x86)\ABBYY FineReader 14>pdfsaver5af.exe /show
This would open the window which we could not find.

I hope you find this instruction easy and helpful!

Kind regards,
Victoria
