Can't Access Build 259 from WPX3

Hi

I upgraded to build 259 of V5 which solved a problem I had importing profiles.

Now I can't access PDFXC from WordPerfect X3.

If I try to print I get:

Warning
Unable to access printer
PDF-Xchange Printer 2012
Check the status of the printer in the printers folder.


I check the folder, no clues there, click on OK

PrintServer
The document page is set to a custom form that may not be supported by this printer driver. If you incur problems, set your document page size to printer defined sizes.


I click on OK

PrintServer
Error initializing output device


I click on OK

That's it!

In all the years I have used PDFXC I have NEVER had a problem printing from WordPerfect, so there's a first.

thanks for the posting.
The document page is set to a custom form that may not be supported by this printer driver. If you incur problems, set your document page size to printer defined sizes.
What size is the paper in your document? Can you try setting the PDF-XChange Printer to use the same page size as is used in the document or if it is a non-standard paper size can you change it to a standard one and let me know if this is still an issue?

Hi Paul

The page is set at A4 both in the driver and in WordPerfect, now I know WP does things differently with regard to page sizes and interaction with the printer drivers but it's never been an issue before and all my other printers work fine.

Thanks for that Barry,

does this happen with all documents or only certain ones? We would have to attempt to reproduce the issue here to fix anything. We would need your system details as well as the version of Word Perfect (do they have a demo we can use?) and the Word Perfect file.

The easiest way to send us the system details is to use the Viewer to send a Problem Report Help --> Report a Problem and be sure to include all the attachments and default text as well as a cross reference to this forum thread. We will need to print from Word Perfect so I'm not sure how we will go about setting that up however as the current version is WordPerfect 6. We can get a demo of that to test with but it may not help.

Do you have access to a V3 demo we can test with?

Hi Paul

You can download a 30 day version of X6 from the Corel web site, but I can't say if this newer version will still exhibit the same problems as I am having. In the meantime because I have deadlines to meet I have reverted to V4 as that works.

I am running Windows XPSP3

I got your system specs by email. I see you are running a very old build of the Viewer, I suggest you update that to the current version: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVwer.zip meanwhile I will set up an XP SP3 machine to test WP6 on and should have something within a couple of days.

I'll do as you ask, but I don't understand why the V5 pro installation didn't update the viewer? I ticked all the boxes.

Hi Barry,

Not sure which installer (specifically the file name) was used - as some of our products offer the Viewer as an optional additional download and some include the files within the downloaded installer and either way there is a check box that needs to be 'on' to carry out the task - could it be this was set off ?

Pauls instructions will ensure whatever the cause - that it is installed.

Hi Paul

I used the zip installer and definitely checked the option to install the viewer. The only option I didn't select was the option to view within the browser.

For the time being I have gone back to V4 and separately downloaded and installed the current version of the Viewer.

Did you get my PM about version X3 of WordPerfect?

Hi Barry,

I did manage today to reproduce the issue using WPX3. After discussing this with my dev team leader we think it could be related to it using 16 bits. He is testing that theory now and we'll let you know what we find out. It may be that we can change V5 yet....

quiet but not forgotten. We are actually trying to get this done for the next build and it's proving more involved than anticipated. Since this build is coming up soon (18th) you can expect an update here before then as to whether we can get this done.

OK, I am quite relaxed about the issue as I can continue to use my previous version. However, I am a little disappointed that after being a paid up user of PDF-Xchange since its inception (must be well over 7 years now?) I'm a little disappointed that I bought something that I'm unable to use at present.

Hi Barry,

Whilst I understand your dissapointment - I would make the point that you are using an older 16 bit application (WP6) with our latest products that are intended for use with the latest releases of Windows and it is unrealistic to expect us (or MS) to continue to support such older products in perpetuity with the latest MS releases...

At some point you are going to have to settle on using like with like - e.g. Your older WP6 with older Windows and thus our older products from us intended for such use - or migrate to technology that is more in keeping with the timeline of the OS and Products from us ...

We will endeavour to assist if possible - but there will come a time (if it is not here already) where the demand for such support from clients will be insufficient to justify the work required (if technically possible) to continue to ensure compatibility.

we will do what we can - but cannot make assurances in this regard.

Hi John

I fully accept your observation about WP6 being a 16bit application, after all it dates back to 1997! However, I am using WPX3 (V13.0) which as far as I know is a 32bit application, in fact WP has been 32bit since V7. V7 was available as both 16 and 32 bit flavours depending which version of Windows you were using.

As far as I know the only major change between X3 and the current X6 release is improved support for the open document format.

But I'm a bit confused why I'm being told that the problem is due to 16 bit when I'm running a 32 bit application?

Or have I missed something?

Good morning,

Several weeks have now passed since my original post about V5 not supporting my 32bit version of Wordperfect. Has your developer had an opportunity to take a look at what's happening?

If you aren't able to help how do I go about getting a refund? (Not that I want to, but at the moment V5 for me is of no use)

There have been, I must admit higher priorities getting in the way of this. We were about to build a new version today and in light of this thread my development team leader has agreed to postpone that for one day and attempt to address your issue specifically. We will know tomorrow whether this was achieved and will discuss where to go from there based on what we can do.

Hi Paul

I'm in no particular rush, I'm glad that you're still able to consider my issue.

Just for your information I tried the latest build and it was no different.

It seems to me that WPX3 uses a helper app (I believe it's called PrintServer130.exe) to communicate with the printer driver and it seems that it may be this program that is struggling with PDF-Xchange, although of course it has never been a problem with previous versions 4 or earlier.

It seems odd to me that something that worked OK in V4 (and all previous versions from the original beta) and got broken in V5 can't be tracked down.

we will certainly do our best not to break it again... :wink: I'm told the issue was related to Word Perfect changes that should now be consistent so hopefully this is the last you will see of this unless Word Perfect change how it is handled again...
