Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Congratulations for the new viewer. I like the few new things I saw so far. What I am still missing after almost 3 happy years with your viewer is printing text into a PDF - and this is the only thing that I still need Adobe for. Let me explain:
Quite frequently I am framing the program window around certain parts of a page, for instance a newspaper article that I want to have as PDF without getting all the other articles around it. With 'Print - Current View' and printing into a PDF using FreePDF/Ghostscipt I get exactly and only the article, but it is printed as a kind of picture. Letters and words can not be marked and the text is not searchable. On the other hand if I do the same trick in Adobe I get a PDF file with letters and words in it that can be searched for and marked.
Am I doing anything wrong or is there a setting I overlooked. I would really appreciate if this printing text was possible as I am using it for various things.
Thanks ... and regards ...

Hello mbode,
Are those newspaper you are referring to opened in your browser?
If yes we have a plug-in for IE which can convert web pages quite nicely including all hyperlinks on them.
If you had something different in mind with "Current View" please make a screenshot, zip it and attach it to this thread and we will have a look.
Best,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
Please see attached example. I did it on your last newsletter. My issue is not just related to newspapers.
Best regards,
Matthias

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Hi mbode,
I used your example and sent the current view to our PDF-XChange 4 Lite Printer and it worked as the adobe PDF printer did, resulting in selectable text. So the issue is definitely using FreePDF/Ghostscipt.
I would suggest contacting them.
Our products function as expected.
Best,
Chris

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Hi,
could this be the same issue as this one?
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... =35&t=9387
My solution was to replace PDFCreator (based on Ghostscript) with PDF-XChange Pro, but Vasyl also announced that there would be a workaround in the next PDF-Viewer release.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick help. Yes it works with your printer. I must admit that I have the pro package but usually am not using it to produce PDFSs. I prefer FreePDF as I always have access right problems with your software writing to My Files folders (Win 7 user without admin rights). I have no problems with other software. But I guess that has to go to an other thread. The initial problem is solved.

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
I could be wrong, but I think the problem is the option Print => Advanced => Print Text as Curves. The resultant PDF is not an image per se (at least not a bitmap image) but rather a set of curves defining each letter (which can be infinitely zoomed, for example). It would be nice to be able to turn off that feature (currently the only options are "Auto," "For Embedded Fonts," and "Always"), so that Ghostscript can properly build the PDF as text (with optional font embedding, as specified by the user).mbode wrote:Congratulations for the new viewer. Edit: Ok, I think it's just a problem with Ghostscript; maybe the wrong settings are being used with pdfwrite? I tried converting a simple notepad document to PDF using CutePDF Writer (relies on Ghostscript), and the text is non-selectable. The PDF-XChange Lite printer works to generate selectable text. I still think the user should be given the option to disable "Print Text as Curves," so that font embedding is an alternative option.

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Sorry, but printing text as text is more complex task than printing text as curves (PDF may contain embedded fonts, which cannot be used for printing without converting, and this is why they converted to curves). So there will be not option to disable "Print Text as Curves", all we can do - improve font processing in Auto mode, so most fonts will be used for printing (but not all).stevedogg wrote: I still think the user should be given the option to disable "Print Text as Curves," so that font embedding is an alternative option.

There may be something wrong with FreePDF/GS but there is still an issue with you Pro viewer.
In the attached zip
- the first page was printed (current view) with your Pro viewer on your Pro printer -> text is not selectable. However, immediately after creation of the print the text was selectable but when I had copied in the two screen shots (snippets in header, page etc.) and saved in the XChange viewer the text was not selectable any more.
- The second page was created printing the current view from adobe with FreePDF/GS -> text is selectable.
- The last page is the original page from which I picked/select the current view to print.
I had this a couple of times before that first text was selectable but after saving with the pro viewer it was not selectable/searchable anymore. That it is not searchable is the bigger problem.
Best regards ...

In any case, printing is not intended to convert PDF to PDF - so, we cannot and will not promise selectable text in the PDFs printed from the viewer.

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Hi Ivan,
Understood. I am not complaining, I just wanted to be helpful and thought you are aiming to be better than the competitors …
My assumption is, there is a small bug in the viewer. Immediately after creating the printed PDF it was searchable (text selectable). A few steps later the text was not selectable any more and not searchable. That happend within the viewer. I do not have the time to do many test on this.
The good thing about my way of printing the current view is that the resulting PDF is actually smaller in size. Especially when printing parts of large pages this is helpful. The cropping seems to simply put a filter on the visible parts of a doc without changing the size. That's why I don't like it.

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Hello mbode,
Ivan just made a statement there.
There are quite some things we should consider when sending a file for printing, and cover almost endless set of options and preferences for all different devices.
Sometimes it's much easier and faster to pass the text as curves, instead of text + font information, or due to some other restrictions we need to pass it this way, and the result (when you print to a file and not paper) is that the text information is lost. This has it's obvious disadvantages when you print PDF to PDF, but also results in smaller files.
And cropping vs reprinting also reduces the size as you have noticed as the information which is just "hidden" when cropping is actually discarded when reprinting.
Best,
Stefan

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
Then what am I doing wrong? Whenever I have used cropping the actual file size is actually slightly larger than the original. Only Adobe 8 manages to make files slightly smaller but the difference is marginal. That is basically the reason why I came up with this workaround to print current view in a PDF.Tracker Supp-Stefan wrote:And cropping vs reprinting also reduces the size as you have noticed as the information which is just "hidden" when cropping is actually discarded when reprinting.
Anyway, I very much prefer your software to Adobe and understand that you have other priorities.

Re: Printing Current View into PDF -> Letters are gone
HI mbode,
I think the point Stefan was making is that cropping should reduce the size if you crop then reprint to a PDF using the driver. Just cropping does not because as you pointed out it only defines the visible area and does not actually remove the content that was cropped.

Apologies if I wrote it a bit obscure there mbode!
Paul's comment is the right one - that's exactly what I had in mind when I posted earlier.
Best,
Stefan
