Changing associated icon

Post by necromancer »

Since going "Pro" have tried repeatedly to change the PDF associated icon to the one that looks like Adobe's which is third in the PDFXCview.exe file and everybody is familiar with. However, the system keeps changing it back to Tracker's proprietary icon. How can it be made to "stick"?

We will fix changing icon and verb strings on startup into the next build of the viewer.
By the way, PDFXCview.exe doesn't contain Acrobat icons.

In XP, you can change any default icon and make it stick by making a change in the registry value of the default icon.

In this case, you would go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeViewer\DefaultIcon. Then, modify the value there and put your own icon/path in its place. Then, to keep it from being changed, you will need to modify permissions on that key. Right click "default icon", choose permissions, then delete all those with permissions (Power Users, System, Administrators, etc) all users except yourself, and also from "advanced", uncheck inherited permissions for any users you leave there. Leave only your own login ids there, and give them "read only" permissions. If, after unchecking inherited permissions, there are no users there, add yourself with the "add button". Again, give yourself read-only permission.

If you allow System or Administrators to remain, they will overwrite your changes.

If you do that, the default icon key will remain if you uninstall the app.. Changes will not be allowed at all on that key until you go in and give your own login permissions more authority to write/change that key... AND whatever icon you have chosen for your app will stick
