A small PDF text-only file (14 K) becomes 10 times bigger after adding highlight of a single line of text and hand-written text.
Any suggestion how to avoid it?

Don't type any text.
The highlighting barely makes any difference, but if you type some text then the font is embedded in the PDF.
I tried with a 25K file, it jumped to 194K with a few words of text.
25.4 KB (26010 bytes) original
26.4 KB (27106 bytes) one hilighted line
110 KB (113243 bytes) one word in Verdana Regular.
I think there may be some room for improvement here, as I find if I look in document properties that more than one font is embedded.

SMALL TEXT FILE + SOME DRAWINGS ==> HUGE FILE
The problem is that I do not enter ANY TEXT AT ALL. It's just a small text file and I would like to highlight something, circle something else. I had the same problem with Foxit PDF editor: huge resulting files. It should be a tool for selecting what fonts to add, maybe only existing one

All I can say is, "That is not my experience if I just highlight some text." If I add a callout with some text, or just plain text it is a different story. However, if I use a different font, I can reduce the file size substantially.
With one word in Accent SF (a Serif™ font) instead of Verdana:
54.8 KB (56167 bytes)
and with one sentence:
55.1 KB (56460 bytes)
No doubt it would be better if fonts were subsetted, but IMO that is a bit much to expect from a free PDF reader. Adobe Acrobat it is not.
