Embedded fonts render incorrectly in this PDF

Post by davidwgreen »

This is my first post here, hope someone can advise.

I've recently started using PDF-XChange Viewer and like the markup tools especially.

But I was disappointed to find that it cannot render the fonts in a PDF file correctly, even though they are all embedded. :(
I have placed the (5MB) zipped PDF here, as it's too large to attach:
<http://www.davidwgreen.talktalk.net/problem_PDF.7z>

By contrast, Adobe Reader 8 has no trouble rendering everything correctly.

Is there a fix for this, or at least a reason?

 I just came to report the same problem. It seems to render a lot better in PagePlus X2 than it does in PDF-XChange even though the fonts are missing. OK in Adobe Reader 7.0 too.

Perhaps it has something to do with the embed flag on the fonts?

Please can you tell us something about the cause of this problem? If may be a similar cause to the same issue shown in PagePlus X2. Or, perhaps it will help me avoid the problem when I generate a PDF with embedded fonts.

Hi David,

Unfortunately your file was not attached - maybe it was not zipped or even if zipped perhaps exceeded the forum upload limits - so its hard to be specific - and I am fairly confident the problem is resolved for you too.

If you could zip and email then file directly to us (usrfiles@tracker-software.com) I can be more specific in my answer.

Please include a link back to this forum URL link for reference.

Many thanks

Hi David,

This file
appears
to render without issue here in the latest beta release of Build 18 - please see attached screen shot, as you will probably be able to recognise any problems quicker than I can moving between viewers - If you see any issues - please do come back.

Thanks

attached is a pdf (in chinese).

both adobe acrobat reader and foxit can display it correctly,
but it is terrible in xchange-viewer (only some symbols in non-chinese can be found).

and i also found that for some pdf files in chinese, xchang-viewer can render perfectly, but for some (e.g. attached), it has no way to see; but all these files are ok in acrobat and foxit reader.

what is the matter with this? can the next version resolve this?

I have to say that in this new version,
the pdf file is still not rendered correctly, althoug it is a little better than the former version, but that is not what we expected...

maybe you can try to open that file to have a look, many words are missing....

Hi,

Can you please markup a selection of text on a page that does not show - for us it is not so obvious - not being able to recognise easily Chinese text - as mentioned previously - to me it looked A-ok.

Or if you prefer - please take a screen shot in a suitable imaging program of the missing text say when viewed in Acrobat and when viewed in our product ?

Thanks

the difference is very obvious....

this file is good/perfect in foxit and acrobat reader,

by contrast, the pdf-xchange viewer is not that good...

and I believe, there may be a lot of other files having the same problem if they were opened in pdf-xchange viewer

I have found another minor problem,
even though I set the default zoom mode is "fit width", every time I open a new file, it is always in the "100%" mode, but not the "fit width"...

I don't know if there are other people meet the same problem...

What you are seeing - is not what i am seeing - please see attached screen shot of what I see in the release build made available today from our web site - perhaps you should un-install and download and install afresh ?

i saw your attached snap-shoot, yes it is ok.

however, the same problem is still here, even after I uninstall the software and reinstall it......

i don't why, but if the pdf files i opened contain any embeded chinese fonts, it will just give the similar result.... many words are missing....

Hi,

Please use the option to report issues under the 'Help' drop down menu of the Viewer and allow the report to include your system info etc - this will provide us with information specific to your system and will assist us greatly in understanding why we don't have any problem with this file - but you do.

Also a screenshot of the "Fonts" page in the "Document properties" dialog of the PDF-XChange Viewer for this file as you see it would assist greatly - please zip and attach this to the forum post here.

Many thanks

Hi,

We can see why in this instance this problem arises :
The CJK font used (STSong-Light) isn't embedded in the file and therefore the viewer tries to find a font in the system which contains the required subset of chars.

However the core of trouble is: while for the font there is corresponding 'bit' within the fonts info (there are 128 bits - one for each unicode range),the font does not contain ALL symbols from this range.

We are working on a solution and will advise as soon as available.

In the meantime of course the work around is to embed the font in the file - if you are the creator - though it will increase the file size potentially - substantially!

Thanks for your patience !

hi~

thanks for your response.

so nice are you guys.

the occasion is that although I can re-print that file to a new pdf file, but there are so many such files that I don't think it is a good way (such kind of files were created by a chinese journal, which covers a wide range of sciences). in this case, many people, especially in China, may have the chance to meet such problem. in fact, I have known from several chinese forums that many people have discussed this and are asking how to resolve it.....

re-creating such pdf files is not a good way, because there are so many such files and it is not a easy job.

but I think you guys can resolve this very quickly, because both acrobat and foxit can display them very well, I think, again, that it may not be a very difficult question.

waiting for your good news.

I don't know why it is ok in your computer (as shown by your captured shot)....

I have tried this file on more than 10 computers in our laboratory...

it always has the same problem..

anyway, since you know the problem, we can just wait now
