File icon behaviour

Post by pfhughes »

Using stand-alone desktop, W7 home premium 64 bit, admin install of PDF-XChange Viewer as default reader.

Problem - the file icon for PDF files when using the admin. account appear full-sized as expected, see attached file. However, when logged on as a used the PDF file icon is now shown much reduced inside a clear frame with a lined border. No other programs or file icons are affected.

Swapping to PDFXEdit as the default reader exhibits the same behaviour, and I am at a loss trying to correct this. Any suggestions would be very welcome indeed

Hello pfhughes,

Please note that the Viewer is now no longer developed, and we might not be able to fix issues in it.

Can you try to right click on a shortcut for the Viewer, and under Properties -> Change Icon - see if there are other ones available that you can pick?

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

yes the 2 PDF icons and up/down arrows are available, but only change the shortcut icon and not the file display icons. As admin. I can change the default icon for PDFXCview.exe (using Nirsoft's FileTypeMan x64) which is then shown in the admin. file listing, but the user file listing remains the same as the previous screenshot. I removed the command program, and the file type, then re-installed the command program with no change to the behaviour. Is there some way to TOTALLY remove all settings, registry entries etc. to then allow a clean re-install ???

Regards, Phillip

Hi Philip,

Thanks for the post - Can you please try rebuilding the Windows Icon Cache and see if that helps?
