Scan Driver Issue

Post by hmw »

I own both Viewer Pro and Tools (both 2.5.214.2) installed on a new Windows 7 PRO SP1 (64 bit) computer. I also have both Viewer and Tools (both 2.5.212.0) installed on a Windows XP PRO SP3 (32 bit) computer. I have a network, and have both a Brother 7820N laser multi-function printer and an Epson V500 Scanner attached to the network. I have the latest drivers for both.

Both the Brother and the Epson have TWAIN drivers, and the Brother also has a WIA driver. On my XP, Viewer and Tools will recognize both the WIA and TWAIN drivers. On the Windows 7, they will only recognize the Brother WIA driver. On the Windows 7 computer, I also have Photoshop Elements, Irfanview, and PaperPort {all three 32 bit programs]. They recognize both the TWAIN and the WIA drivers.

Any idea how I can determine why Viewer and Tools on Windows 7 will not recognize the TWAIN drivers? I found a 2004 entry in your FAQ that mentioned a scanner device test, but the download link no longer works.

Also, are the versions of Viewer and Tools that I am running on my Windows 7 computer 32 bit or 64 bit programs? I installed them in Program Files (x86).

Hi Harry,

Thanks for the post - if you used the EXE installer, then this will automatically detect your system architecture and install accordingly. If your installation of Win 7 is 64-bit, then the application will be installed as 64-bit and directing the install path to Program Files (x86) will not change this.

If this is the case, then this would be why our applications cannot see the TWAIN drivers, as 64-bit applications are not able to work with 32-bit scanner drivers. You can get around this either by uninstalling and reinstalling using the 32-bit MSI:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

Or by using the Portable Viewer.

Will:

Boy you do everything here.

For VIEWER, I downloaded the .zip installer, which opened a .EXE file, which I double-clicked to install. Was that correct? For TOOLS, there was only the .zip installer.

Both of the above packages, on their download pages, say (32/64 bit). Was there an option I missed somewhere that let me choose either 32 bit or 64 bit?

I just sent an Email to Brother, to ask if their latest driver package that I installed, which says for 64 bit Windows 7, includes a 64 bit TWAIN driver.

Hi Harry,

A little bit of this, a little bit of that I suppose

There's nothing wrong with the way you installed, using the EXE for either application is a perfectly acceptable method of installation. The only issue that might arise is one such as this, where you have a 64-bit installation of Windows (therefore a 64-bit installation of our application) and need to use 32-bit drivers.

I apologize, but I wasn't actually aware there was no PDF-Tools MSI available.A colleague of mine has informed me that we do have a 32-bit exe installer for Tools, so here's the link to that:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFTOOLS32.zip

Viewer 32-bit MSI:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/downloads/PXCViewer_x86.msi

If you don't want to uninstall the 64-bit Viewer, then you can download and run the Portable Viewer (32-bit) here:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/downloads/PDFX_Vwr_Port.zip

Other than that, the only option would likely be to use Brother's 64-bit Drivers. While I believe that it's technically possible to have 64-bit TWAIN drivers, I've yet to see them.

Will:

Why is what should be simple, so complicated <g>?

Brother told me that the installation package I have contains a 64 bit TWAIN driver. I just sent them some more information, to try and determine if that is really correct or not.

The 32 bit TOOLS link you sent me if for Version 4.0.195.0. Is that the latest 32 bit available? I have 4.0.214.2 installed.

I could not determine the VIEWER Version # for the link you sent. I have 2.5.214.2 installed.

Since my account is blocked, I cannot run anything newer than 2.5.214.2.

The portable link for VIEWER you sent me is for Ver. 3.09, which you blocked. So I found 2.5.214.2 on your website. I installed it on a USB stick, and it works just fine. Both TWAIN and WIA driver options.

The portable version is smaller than the 'normal' version. Why is that?

Hi Harry,

It does not include the browser plug-in files, nor manuals, or OCR languages (by default) - the idea of a portable application is to be as small as possible and we've done that with the Viewer Portable.

Thanks for the portable info.

I still have not heard re: the following questions I asked Will (posted on 9/25 at 3:36 PM). Hopefully someone is checking into them.

Hi Harry,

I apologize, I see so many users emailing or posting about old style serial keys in the new builds, that I'd completely forgotten that we had spoken before about this!

Here are the links that are appropriate for your license:

Viewer 32-bit MSI:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PXCViewer_x86_307.msi

Viewer 64-bit MSI:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PXCViewer_x64_307.msi

Regarding the 32-bit Version of PDF-Tools - I believe that this is the most updated version currently available for download. I will talk to the Dev. Team about making a later Version available.

Also, have you heard anything further from Brother regarding their 64-bit TWAIN drivers?

Will:

Thanks for the links.

Let me know after you talk to development if there is a later version for Tools. I have 4.0.214.2.

Brother has decided that my issue is too difficult to deal with via Email [whatever that means], so they are going to call me. I'll let you know if/when I hear anything.

In the meantime, I'll just hold the two .msi files you sent me until I hear from Brother.

Hi Harry,

I'm afraid that there isn't any later portable version of PDF-Tools available and, from what I've been told, it's not currently possible to build one with the current build. It may be possible once PDF-Tools has undergone its overhaul (not current ETA).

I don't suppose you've heard from Brother yet, have you?

Will:

I never heard from Brother, so I forgot about them.

I installed the Tools Version 4.0.195.0 you sent me. I didn't realize that it was a portable version. Is there a non-portable 32 bit version available?

You sent me this link for Viewer:
>>Viewer 32-bit MSI:

However, Tracker will not let me install it on my 64 bit computer. So I am stuck. Is my only option the portable version, which I have?

In earlier posts, you said:
>>While I believe that it's technically possible to have 64-bit TWAIN drivers, I've yet to see them.
and:
>>If this is the case, then this would be why our applications cannot see the TWAIN drivers, as 64-bit applications are not able to work with 32-bit scanner drivers.

If 64 bit TWAIN drivers may not be available, and 64 bit applications cannot use 32 bit scanner drivers, why does Tracker make 64 bit programs and no/few programs for 32 bit ones? Am I the only one who uses TWAIN drivers?

The 32 and 64 bit regular versions are contained in the same installer using Windows self recognition API's to determine what version of Windows is installed and installing the appropriate version based on that - so it is impossible to install the 32 bit version that way as Windows states it requires the 64 bit version if it is a 64 bit PC, that's what is provided by the installer - hence the portable version supplied.

John:

Now I am really confused. If what you say is true, then why did Will send me the following, when he knew that I had a 64 bit machine?

>>Viewer 32-bit MSI:

but it obviously uses the installer you mention, because I could not install it.

Also, I have non-portable 32 bit programs installed on this 64 bit computer, such as PhotoShop Elements, Irfanview ahd PaperPort, and they all work just fine with a 32 bit TWAIN driver.

John:

I installed the portable version of Viewer on my 64 bit computer. However, Windows won't recognize it as the program to open .pdf files, no matter what I do. I enter the correct .exe file, but still nothing. What have I done wrong?

To get around this problem, I reinstalled the 64 bit version of Viewer, which Windows recognizes, Then I open my portable version of Tools which is installed on my computer, and scan with a TWAIN driver from here. Not very direct or convenient, but it does work.

Hi Harry,

I apologize sincerely, I wasn't aware that the 32-bit Viewer MSI couldn't be installed on a 64-bit system.

The Editor MSI is a different story and can be used on a 64-bit system:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXVE5.x86.msi

Regarding your suggestion to compile more 32-bit installers, I've just discussed this with our dev team and a request is now in. I certainly feel that this should be possible and we will revert as soon as I have more solid info on the outcome.

Other than that, I'm afraid that there's very little more that we can suggest.

Will:

I went ahead and installed Editor, although I think Viewer is easier to use. And I appreciate your asking the developers to compile more 32 bit installers, since it appears that 64 bit drivers are few and far between.

You guys have given this subject much more effort than you should have had to, and I really appreciate the support. So except for the question below (which I asked a couple of days ago), I will leave you alone until you let me know about more 32 bit installers.

I installed the portable version of Viewer on my 64 bit computer. However, Windows won't recognize it as the program to open .pdf files, no matter what I do. I entered for Windows the correct PDFXCview.exe file, but still nothing. What have I done wrong?

Hi Harry,

You're more than welcome, we're glad to have helped!

Regarding setting the portable version as default, I'm afraid that this isn't something that isn't possible in Windows without making entries to the Registry, which isn't something that a portable application can do (it's against the nature of portable apps). The portable Viewer has to be started and PDF's opened using the File --> Open (Ctrl + O) method.
