No Hebrew Support in Version 3!

Post by ymmp »

Hi,

I am super disappointed that there is absolutely no Hebrew support in V3. It's what I waited over a year for and bought a maintenance package for.
BTW, that's another major disappointment regarding the maintenance - because of how late V3 is, I am not really getting much out of it. I really think you should extend everyone's maintenance for at least 6 extra months or more appropriately a year.

Thanks

Hello ymmp,

Could you please share some more details, as none of the team is native hebrew speaker/writer, but from my tests I could paste hebrew text taken from elsewhere in a document, and it was properly oriented (e.g. there was no mirroring of the character's order).

Best,
Stefan

Hi

Agree with ymmp.

There is no support for RTL (right to left) editing.

You can use Hebrew characters, but when you type, it is in a reverse order.

Hi brauner,

Thank you for your answer. Can you be more specific in what case Hebrew characters is displayed in reverse mode (when using edit content tool for PDF editing, or in pop-up edit). Please note, that when you are typing some Hebrew text on PDF, you need to use font, that supports that language (for example "Arial Unicode MS"). In other case characters indeed may appear in reverse order.

Best regards.

I'm sorry to say that it's not working in any situation - If I want to find a word in Hebrew text, I have to type it in backward (really tedious when it is a phrase). Pop up notes are the right direction, but it gets all distorted (showing boxes etc), copy text pastes backwards, etc.
All of the above work in Adobe.

I have had a different experience in entering Hebrew text.

I can enter (ie type) in Hebrew with the letters appearing in the right way (RTL) and subsequent words appearing to the left.

This is only possible using the Sticky Notes tool (I cannot see any other way of entering any text, regardless of language into the current beta).

However, it is not possible to set the paragraph direction to RTL so that punctuation, etc appears in the right place. Also adjusting properties is not available for Sticky Notes yet too.

Hi Victor, ymmp and brauner,

Thank you for your feedback on this issue.
Our development Director is already aware of this problem and it will be fixed on the next builds of PDF-XChange Editor.
We have created a ticket for its resolution with description: #1717: Support for RTL languages, which will be taken by the Development team.
If you have any questions please feel free to come back.
Thanks.

Hi,
Does your latest version already support Hebrew form editing ?
I tried the last version and it still doesn't work (characters reverse order).
please let us know if you intend to solve that problem .

Hello nirnir2,

Actually right to left input should already be possible in build 301 of the Editor.
Have you made sure you are using this latest build:

Hi nirnir2,

I'm no expert on this but isn't that reversed text what is needed for right to left?

If you have some other application that does work with Hebrew as you expect perhaps you can illustrate with screen shots the difference between what you are seeing and what you want?

attached a form , once filled with acrobat and once with your tool .
in each form I typed to the first field three letters .
you can see the difference .
I think that you add the typed letters to the begining of the string instead the normal way (to the end)
In RTL drawtext windows draw the string from right to left , you dont have to manipulate the content .

if i fill the form in acrobat and open with your tool is display it right but when i enter the field it reverse the order again .

Hi,

we have identified the cause - The problem is because currently we have some problems using some fonts for shaping (conversion of unicode string to glyphs indices and positions), and we are currently looking for alternate method in addition to the Windows Uniscribe API used to resolve this - we hope to have a fix soon, but I am afraid I cannot provide any definite timescale until we have researched and tested out the various solutions...

My comment was directed at nirnir2 to let him know I read Hebrew and understood the form he sent you as an example...it was for a motor insurance application.

Mine's just gone up 60% here in BC because some crazy woman says her 18 month old baby got whiplash (wonder how the baby explained that one!) when I gently side swiped her car after she braked for no reason !

Israeli drivers are the most mental in the World. My auntie used to be the chief physio on the biggest rehabilitation hospital in the Middle east and more Israelis are injured and maimed on the roads than in all the wars put together.

Braking for no reason is a defence in the UK. In the UK, we have many sites for comparing hundreds of types of insurance policies. I saved over £4,000 by putting everything I had through those sites. Some savings were so good, I had to double check the cover.

I would be surprised if the baby did get whiplash - their bones are very soft and can give a lot more rather than #.

Good luck,

DrT

You want to keep quiet about how many Israeli's are injured on the roads - we dont want to give the 'bad guys' any ideas :-)

About the UK - yep its far more liberal than here in BC where you have to use the provincial insurer for the bulk of your insurance whether you want to or not, belive it or not your speaking to someone who luved in the UK for 45 years :)

Tomorrow I leave for the UK and will be there for the next 2 months - part busines and luckily part pleasure

cheers

Hi nirnir2,

It certainly won't be years :)

We should be able to include Right-to-left (and Top-to-bottom) scripts support in one of the next two builds. In fact we originally had RTL support in the Editor, but we were using Windows Uniscribe API and it relies on fonts installed on the system. We could not make it work with most fonts inside a PDF which made necessary rewriting this part of our code using a different tool - hence the delay.

Hi Nirnir,

We are still on the same build as when I made my last reply. RTL language support is now rewritten, but we are still having some issues with languages that use UCS4 symbols. Once those are resolved RTL support will be available in the Editor.

We've had the Editor officially released last Monday (build 305) and then build 306 was released last Friday.
Can you please check if rtl texts are correctly working for you with this latest build?

Hi stefan,
I'm very happy to say that it works :D :D :D
there are some small problems :
1. left/right arrows goes to the opposite direction .
2. you can't select hebrew text
3. problems with text position in some of the fields,
please open the attached pdf with acrobat and with your reader
look at the filled fields at the bottom of the document.
in you reader the text is located too low in the fields and half of it is hidden
in Acrobat it look fine .

4. Great job , when the sdk will be ready also ?
5. Thanks

Hi nirnir2,

Thanks for your comments. I will pass them to the colleagues in development for investigation.
in 3) you mention attached files - are those the same files from earlier in this conversation of did you intend to attach new ones that didn't get properly uploaded?

The SDK is still some time away. As soon as we have an exact date we will let everyone know.
