HIghlighting not working on scanned pages

Post by jsjag1990 »

I have a very old version of PaperPort, version 9 that will allow me to scan and save as a PDF. I can then highlight words on the saved PDF but for some reason when I use PDF-Xchange I can't do the same thing. I just purchased a license and maybe I am missing something but if I can't mark up a scanned page, I have wasted my money. Not happy about that one. What am I missing?

Hi jsjag1990,

To be able to highlight text in a PDF document with the viewer there must be actual text and not an image of text. Think of a screen shot of a Word document, you can see the text but cannot make changes. So to be able to scan a document and end up with text and not an image there must be an OCR option with your scanner. This is quite common. I recommend examining your documentation for your scanner, see if this is an option, and enable it. That will produce text based PDFs. not image based ones.

Regards,
Jamie.

Thanks for the idea but I can't find any controls in the scanner that will set scan to PDF text.

You can always highlight words on an image using the rectangle tool.

Open the properties toolbar and set the rectangle fill colour to yellow or whatever highlight colour you want, set the border width to zero, and the transparency to 40%. Then right-click on the rectangle and set the current properties to the default.

JSJAG1990

paperport requires ocr software to produce "PDF text" If you try and index a scanned document and don't have ocr software it will throw an error message.

I use paperport at work but didnt want to fork out for a copy for home..fortunately the software "MP Navigator" that came with my canon scanner gives me the option of scan to "TEXT OCR" and saves as a pdf.

Hi,

there is an even better work-around, that was posted here some time ago:
Make a style for the line-tool with appropriate width and color and set the blend mode to "mulitply".

Hi Eva,

Yes - thanks for mentioning that. It is certainly a good alternative! :)

Best,
