Condensed Font issue (Clarion 9.0.0.10376, Windows 8.1)

Post by StuAndrews » Wed Nov 19, 2014 10:39 pm

Hi Folks,

Am having an issue with HelveticaNeue-Condensed.

It appears fine as a font in the windows "fonts" folder (pic 1).

But in the pdf generated, it appears VERY condensed, ie overlapping (pic 2).

I've done the following:

1. Tried to manually embed the specific font.
2. Changed settings like compress fonts, pdf version.
3. Even, as a very long shot, followed Arnor's instructions here (http://www.icetips.com/blog/index.php/2 ... eration-te) - hoping against hope it would magically help, even though it's for clarion pdf gen rather than pdftools.
4. Updated to the latest 4.0.311.0 PDFTools (Oct 2014).

Unfortunately none of these things has made any difference.

Any chance I'm missing something simple? Or perhaps there's a fix?

Cheers.

Can we please get the PDF file and the .WMF (Cla????.tmp) file that is generated when you run the report ?

This will help us analyse and hopefully provide an answer.

Thanks
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

WMF is too big (10.8 meg, even zipped is 6.3meg).

I've put them up on Dropbox, let me know once you've gotten them.

Hi Stu!

I first looked at the PDF and noted the problem with the "By Ian Ludlum..." line.

I then tried using our PDF-Viewer's New Document From Image method and discovered that it fixed the "By Ian Ludlum..." line spacing issue, but caused problems with the sandersnoonan.com.au line at the bottom right of the page. I suspect the latter is caused by mixing regular and bold fonts in the same field.

My suggestions:

1. If the "By Ian Ludlum..." field is a text field, then I suggest widening it.

2. You might consider making the sandersnoonan.com.au with the mixed font into an image and populating it onto the page.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm only concerned about the "by Ian Ludlam" line, not worried about the .com one, because if I solve one, then hopefully I solve all (but even not, one thing at a time).

So, with that in mind.

It is a report string field.

Making the field wider does not do anything. It's already much wider than the text that it shows.

In the WMF it does look better, like the "condensed" spacing is working. But when you come to the pdf, there's a great deal of overlap.

So you don't know of anything in pdftools that might be causing this?

Also, what would cause the New Document From Image method to solve the problem?

Can I programmatically call that method from pdftools (this is in a webserver, so the pdf is all that we see)?

Hi Stu!

1. I can't see why anything in PDF-Tools would cause this. I'll pass it along to our Project Manager and see if he has any ideas.

2. The New Document From Image is not part of PDF-Tools but is part of the PDF-Viewer ActiveX. I only used it as a test to see if we could get a good PDF page out of it. That solved the "Ian Ludlum" problem but revealed a different one involving the "sandersnoonan.com.au" field.

Hi Craig,

So I'm just wondering then, if the New Document from Image "solved" the first problem .. How can I do the same with PDF Tools?

Hi Stu!

It seems to be a PDF-Tools issue so I'm sending it off to our Project Manager for review.

Hi Stu!

One other thought on this: how are you setting your page size for the final PDF pages?

Are you using a run-time size with margins? Or image size with no margins?

I'm asking because if something alters the PDF page size in certain ways, the image must be reduced in scale, and that can lead to strange effects.

Hey Craig,

Yeah, it might be something like that.

I do manually resize, in the "file info" tab of the pdftools template. There was a reason why I did this, but it was a couple of years back, am not sure why now.

Will look into it.

Hi John,

Okay.

I've been working on another pdf report, with the same fonts, "Design time" pdf file info dimensions, and this time I:

1. Create the entire image in a draw window proc, save it, then
2. In a Draw Drawer on the report (a single big one, the size of the report), read in the image.

This way, the font is preserved correctly.

So am guessing that the problem is sometime after the wmf and in the pdf generation.

Hi Stu!

Just received your email, thanks very much. I tried using our PDF-Viewer's New Document from Image File function and it produces the same problem, so this is systemic somewhere in the our rendering software.

I'll pass it along for further review.

Hi Stu!

According to our Project Manager, that HelveticaNeue-Condensed font is the problem.

It's not a standard Windows font, and it's not a free font either. When it comes to building PDF's containing it, the "font metrics" are set to the dimensions of HelveticaNeue-Condensed glyphs. Because the font is not available at PDF display time on most Windows PC's, Windows is "helpfully" selecting another font to replace it. Naturally, any substitute font - especially any proportional font - is not identical to the specified font. The glyphs may differ in height and/or width from the desired font. Consequently the display is messed up.

The obvious solution Is to include the font in the Font Table for the report. This will cause only the specific font glyphs actually used in the PDF text to be embedded in the PDF, thus solving that problem. This is where it gets sticky, however. Your client will have to be licensed by the font vendor to use the font in that way, or they may face legal issues.

The font tables are on the Fonts tab in the PDF-Tools Global and Report Procedure Extensions.

Hi Craig,

Okay, a couple of things.

1. Apologies, in the process the font-face was changed to Trade Gothic.

2. The licensing point remains, and I've put the font names into the "Fonts to Force" section on the local report.
- These are ALL the fonts referenced in the code that creates the image in the report.

HOWEVER .. Even after doing this, the issue is still happening. Still the same.

Could there be a difference between the font name in the clarion code and the font name that windows recognises?

Hi Stu!

You do have to use the correct name that Windows uses, or it won't be recognized.

You can find out if the font is included by opening the PDF in the Viewer, pressing Ctrl+D and checking the Font tab.

Note that Windows may have multiple versions of a font, like "My Font," "My Font Bold," "My Font Italic," etc. so you might have to specify each version.

Hi Craig,

1. If you look at the pdf I sent through, there are no fonts.

2. I've definitely forced the windows font names into the pdf, and the issue is still the same.

What next?

Hi Craig,

Even when I force the font names to be embedded, the "Fonts" section of the pdf document properties is still blank (no records).
