Pagination incorrect with printer drivers

Post by pglewis » Wed Feb 28, 2007 3:40 pm

One of our clients sent an example document where the print preview and resulting PDF file with the Tracker print driver does not match the results when viewed in Normal view, or previewed using any other print driver.

They have a hard page break in the document after the last line on one of the pages, however, the Tracker driver puts this line as the first line on the next page and thus it sits on that page by itself. An example the client sent converted by CutePDF does not exhibit this behavior.

Is this an known issue?

Thanks.

I can gladly do so, but there is legal information in the document which requires that I password protect the zip at the least. Is there a way to send it directly to support or send an email with the password?

Hi,

Please do - best idea is to email to usrfiles@tracker-software.com with a link included in the email back to this forum message for reference - please note all files must be zipped.

Note that the problem manifests itself near the end of the document, in item 25 in the Table of Contents. When viewed using a standard laser-jet print driver, line 25 stays on page ii. With the Tracker print driver line 25 is pushed off to page iii by itself.

Hi Phil,

have taken a look and will endeavour to explain why you see this difference - its not a bug in the driver - simply a difference in design.

MS Word is very sensitive to a printer's parameters, e.g. If one printer reports that a page height is 29.00 cm another may report this as say 29.01 cm, Word will print the document therefore in two different ways.

One solution in this case is to print the .DOC file on the printer which was default at the time the document was created as Word will use these parameters when creating and printing the document.

Your client can also reformat the document before printing: he just needs to go to File -> Print then into the list of printers, select the required printer and than Press "Close" (after changing the printer the "Cancel" button will be replaced by the "Close" button)

Further - our driver for Letter size and 300 DPI settings - reports that the page height is 3300 pixels, but CutePDF might report say, 3301 or 3299

You could also try adjusting the DPI - this might possibly help.

However - I can assure you if you investigate a letter size page for various Virtual drivers - you will achieve several very minor variations in the size returned.

HTH

A rather unsatisfactory answer for my client as EVERY other printer driver selected shows the same results. Only Tracker's driver pushed this line to the next page. I will explore other solutions as I am losing faith in this product.

Phil,

Just to illustrate the numerous variations in page sizes across a range of Drivers - please see the attached comparison chart.

Whilst I accept that on this occassion it would appear the pages sizes cause issues when using our Driver - there will be examples when the opposite is true and the variation will work in our favour.
