My confusion was that I thought before the upgrade there was a driver with no version number from way back.

Ever since I updated to PDF-Xchange Editor V 7.0 (Build 323.2) the Lite V6 printer driver does not work.
All the prints end up in the queue with status "Sent to printer".

Ok, using the low setting: one page of the document scanned in about 20 seconds with great recognition. I tried the medium setting and it took about 5 minutes to scan, but seemed to work the same as the low setting. On high, nothing.
