I think I found it. I hit the arrow on the far right side of the ribbon itself, and that makes it disappear except for a thin horizontal bar, which if I click on it, makes it appear. OK that's good enough.

I don't recall any specific tasks that would be a common denominator. Of course right now I tried opening up three PDFs on my desktop and I only needed a single double-click to open each--things worked normally. Got it now. Not sure what the deal was (my commenting toolbar was activated). I have typically gone into the Tools menu, but didn't see how to engage that typewriter function. I went in again this morning and it worked just fine.

Just experienced this with the Editor open, and a file already opened up within the editor. If there are any tweaks at all, I'd love to give one a try. Even if I could just cut down on the number of times this happened, that would be fine.

OK it just happened when PDFXChange was not open at all. It took an extra 5 seconds to open a one page pdf file. It has happened before this, but I forget if the Editor was already open at all, but this time I know it was not already open.

I also noticed you have "Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size" enabled and that it is printing to legal with that. I assume you actually have legal paper available? It's not just printing to the wrong paper size is it? Have no idea about printing to legal; we always do the traditional 8.5...

Thanks, that did it.

For those too lazy to click on his link, basically, when you click on the Typewriter icon and start typing, a "Made Default" button appears. In the middle of the formatting that you want to make default, click on that button. It's that simple.

I have been using the auto-center option (both of them) as well as fit to printer margin options.

As far as oversized, they appear in my PDFXChange as 100 percent (view option), and appear to be normal. Given that they are scans of book pages, they are doubtles very large (as in mb)....

OK I've attached a smaller version of the file.
I haven't tried the introductory matter, but if you print the last two pages (24-25), you can see what I mean. Fit to printer margins cuts off material at the bottom; none and Reduce to printer margins make the printed matter 1/3 the size of the page.

Any suggestions on how? I've tried 3 times, turned the PDF into a 7Z file, 34 megs in size. I click the choose file button, and the browser's status bar goes up to 100 percent, but nothing happens after that.
